Chandra Namaskar

Chandra Namaskar, or the lunar prayer, is a sequence of yoga poses that pay homage to the moon. The name comes from the Sanskrit words "Chandra" meaning "moon" and "Namaskar" meaning "greeting". The asana sequence is the same as Surya Namaskar but with the addition of Ardha Chandrasana or Crescent Moon Pose after Ashtang Pranipadasan or Equestrian Pose. This pose helps develop balance and focus and activates the ida nadi or the lunar force of the system of consciousness.

While the sequence of Chandra Namaskar is similar to Surya Namaskar, it is known to be more challenging as it involves lengthening inhalation, exhalation, and breath-holding in sequence. The 14-step sequence represents the various phases of the moon in the lunar cycle. When practiced with gratitude and devotion, Chandra Namaskar can awaken the Divine Feminine energy within.

Chandra Namaskar complements the qualities of Surya Namaskar and can be practiced in the evening or at night, especially when the moon is visible. It is recommended to practice on an empty stomach. The practice of Chandra Namaskar helps channel the lunar energy and promotes relaxation, creativity, and balance. It also stretches and strengthens the spine, hamstrings, and abdominal muscles while balancing the functioning of the circulatory, respiratory, and digestive systems.

The annual performance of Chandra Namaskar by the 108 SN team on New Year's Eve is a unique and meaningful event. The event begins at 11:30 pm on December 31st, with participants coming together to perform 56 Chandra Namaskars, marking the close of one year and the start of a new one. This performance is symbolic of renewal and gives participants a chance to set their intentions for a healthy and fulfilling new year.

The ritual of performing Chandra Namaskar, with its 14 poses completed in four cycles, symbolizes the passage of time and cycle of life. Participants perform the Chandra Namaskar with determination, taking the time to reflect on the past year and set their sights on a healthier future. By the time the performance concludes at 12:30 am on January 1st, participants have not only marked the start of a new year but have also taken steps towards their own personal growth and well-being.

The Chandra Namaskar activity began in the year 2019-2020, and since then, the number of participants has been increasing. Over 1000 participants have performed Chandra Namaskar and experienced its benefits.
